Federal Direct Loan Programs Remain Secure at Western

You may have heard news reports of the current credit crunch and the impact this is having on some lenders who make educational loans. Western Washington University, however, is an established participant in the Federal Direct Loan program, which allows students and parents to borrow directly from the federal government. Absolutely no market-related disruptions to the receipt of Federal Direct loans are anticipated for the upcoming academic year.

If you are a new Western student or a current Western student making satisfactory academic progress and you have completed the 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you will be considered for the Federal Direct Loan program. There are a few eligibility requirements, but by and large it is rare that a regular student does not qualify. And since the federal government through the U.S. Department of Education is your lender, you do not need to submit a Federal Stafford or PLUS loan application to a bank or worry about whether federal student loan funds will be available.
