How to find scholarships for Foreign Study

WWU Scholarships

These are scholarships offered specifically to Western students seeking to study abroad. Applications for the following scholarships are available at International Programs and Exchanges, College Hall 104, (360) 650-3298.

Private Scholarships

Below are privately funded scholarships whose information has been sent to our office.

 

Australearn
Students accepted for one of the Australearn study abroad programs, which offer a grant or scholarship opportunity, will be given applications in their participant guides after their acceptance into the program. For more information and applications contact International Programs and Exchanges, High Street Hall 25, (360) 650-3298.

Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan
The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project offers scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Recipients of Bridging Scholarship will receive a stipend of $2,500 (for students on semester-long programs) or $4,000 (for students on academic-year programs). Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and be enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university in the United States. Applications for Bridging Scholarships are accepted twice a year: the application period for scholarships for Spring 2008 is now closed. The next deadline, for students who will be studying in Japan beginning in Fall 2008, is April 7, 2008. Approximately fifty scholarships will be awarded for Fall 2008.

British Consulate-General Marshall Scholarships
Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Up to forty Scholars are selected each year to study either at graduate or occasionally undergraduate level at a UK institution in any field of study. The scheme allows the Scholars, who are the potential leaders, opinion-formers and decision-makers in their own country, to gain an understanding and appreciation of British values and the British way of life. It also establishes long-lasting ties between the peoples of Britain and the United States. Each scholarship is held for two years.

China Education Tours (CET) Program Scholarships

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals
This scholarship program has a strong focus on the cultural experience, which is designed to give participants understanding for life, education, and professional training in Germany. It is intended primarily for young adults, 18-24, in business, technical, vocational and agricultural training. It is a 12-month program beginning in late July with two months intensive German, four months classroom instruction at a professional or technical school and a five month internship in the chosen career field. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen. Applications and information are available online.

Consulate-General of Japan
This site contains information for those who are interested in studying in Japan, foreign students currently studying in Japan, and students who have studied in Japan in the past.

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia
These scholarships are offered through the Office of International Programs and Exchanges and range from $3,000-$7,000 depending on the length of the study abroad program. Awardees will be expected to propose a service plan to share their experiences with their home campuses, to encourage study in Asia by others, and to spread understanding of Asia in their home communities. To apply, students must have sophomore, junior, senior status during the year in which the scholarship would be used, and must be accepted to an approved study abroad or international exchange program through International Programs and Exchanges. Student must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident at the time of application. Student must currently receive need-based financial aid or demonstrate a verifiable need for financial assistance to participate in the proposed study abroad program. The appliciant is required to submit the Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) figure, calculated through FAFSA, with the Statement of Financial Need through the on-line Freeman-SAIA Application. Priority will be given to students with the most financial need, as well as those with limited prior experience in Asia. Applications are available online. Deadlines vary. Submit applications to WWU/IPE (High Street Hall 25).

Gilman International Scholarship Program
Applicants for this scholarship must be a citizen or national of the United States (not a Permanent Resident), be an undergraduate student in good standing at an institution of higher education in the United States (two or four year schools), must have applied to or been accepted for up to one academic year of study on a program of study abroad approved for credit by the student's home institution (proof of program acceptance is required for disbursement), and must be receiving student assistance from the federal government under Title IV of the Higher Education Act (Pell Grants, Federal Work-Study, Stafford Loans, Perkins Loans, and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants).

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships
The primary purpose of the Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. Ambassadorial Scholarships are awarded for study or training in another country where Rotary Clubs are located. Contact your local Rotary club for more information.

University College London
Scholarships are available for students planning on attending the University College London.

The Blakemore Foundation
This organization offers Asian language and art grants to students.

DAAD, German Academic Exchange Service
DAAD's website is a great source of information for students interested in studying in Germany.

International Student Scholarship Information

Three $500 scholarships will be awarded to currently enrolled students accepted to an approved study abroad or international exchange program through International Programs and Exchanges. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA and must demonstrate both financial need as well as merit.
