American Indian Endowed Scholarship

The American Indian Endowed Scholarship program helps financially needy students with close ties to a Native American community to pursue undergraduate and graduate studies. Scholarship money comes from interest generated through an endowment funded by private contributions and the state. Students can use the scholarships at public colleges and universities and accredited independent colleges, universities and career schools in Washington. The program annually awards about 7 new scholarships and 10 renewal scholarships, ranging from about $500 to $2,000. Students are eligible to receive scholarships for up to five years.

Future Teachers Conditional Scholarship

The Future Teachers Conditional Scholarship and Loan Repayment program is designed to encourage outstanding students and paraprofessionals to become teachers, and to encourage current teachers to obtain additional endorsements in teacher shortage subjects.

In return for conditional scholarships or loan repayments, participants agree to teach in Washington K-12 public schools, (usually two years of teaching for each year of funding). Funding is available for about 100 recipients in 2008-2009.

Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship

The Robert C. Byrd Scholarship is an invitation-only scholarship for high school seniors who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and show promise of continued academic excellence.

Eligible students are selected from the Washington Honors Awards Program and are invited to apply through their senior class guidance counselors. To determine if you are being considered for the Washington Honors Awards Program, contact your high school guidance counselor or the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).

Washington Scholar Award

The Washington Scholars program recognizes the accomplishments of two high school seniors from each of the state’s 49 legislative districts. Students receive scholarships for up to four years of tuition and fees, currently valued at over $20,000 at Western. High school principals nominate the top 1 percent of their school’s graduating senior class on the basis of academic achievement, leadership and community service.

WAVE - Washington Award for Vocational Excellence

The Washington Award for Vocational Excellence honors three vocational students from each of the 49 state legislative districts for outstanding achievement in vocational/technical education.

High schools, skills centers, and community and technical colleges nominate students based on occupational proficiency, leadership, community activities, work experience, and other qualities. A committee, representing business, labor, education, the Legislature and citizens, makes the final selection. Students can use the grants at public two-year and four-year colleges and universities and accredited private colleges, universities and vocational schools in Washington.
