WWU Undergraduate Student Scholarships

Non-Departmental Scholarships

The university offers a number of scholarship programs that are not restricted to a specific major or department. This section includes a description of these scholarship opportunities. American Association of University Women Scholarship

This scholarship supports the AAUW's goal of "providing educational and lifelong learning opportunities that provide women an opportunity for success." The Bellingham branch of AAUW provides funding for two $1,500 scholarships.

Qualifications:

  • Applicant must be a female who has completed at least 90 credits prior to the start of Fall 2017 or is a graduate student. Must be enrolled for at least one quarter prior to the application deadline.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 or better.

Biella Foundation Emergency Scholarship

The Biella Foundation Emergency Scholarship provides assistance to help WWU students alleviate or minimize a financial burden in order to successfully complete their academic coursework. Examples of eligible needs may include tuition and fees, childcare, medical or dental expenses, transportation expenses, housing expenses, or other academic fees or supplies.

Scholarship Criteria

Applicants must:

 --Be enrolled for the quarter in which they are requesting funding

 --Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0

 --Have demonstrated need that has and/or will be incurred during the current academic year

Application Requirements

The required application materials include the application form, a brief, detailed written description of funding needs, and appropriate supporting documentation.

Bill Reed African American Scholarship

The Bill Reed African American Scholarship is a renewable annual award based on merit and need. The scholarship provides support exclusively for African American undergraduate students who have been admitted to Western.

Dr. Patricia Louise Green Swenson Scholarship

This scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Patricia Louise Green Swenson, distinguished graduate. This scholarship will be awarded to a student demonstrating academic merit and financial need.

Qualifications:

  • Applicat must be currently enrolled, undergraduate students planning to attend full time for the upcoming academic year. Must be enrolled for at least one quarter prior to application deadline. Post-baccalaureate students are not eligible.
  • Academic achievement: in general, only students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher need apply.
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need; the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be used to determine financial need.

Dr. Ralph and Mrs. Eleanor Rinne Pre-Med Scholarship

Two $3,000 scholarship awards are available for 2017-2018. Selection is based on demonstration of significant financial need, exceptional academic credentials, and a strong motivation to become a physician.

Facilities Management Scholarship

This fund was established through a gift from the National Association of College and University Business Officers in recognition of an innovative and cost saving floor-care program instituted by Western’s Physical Plant. Preference will be given to spouses, sons and daughters of Western employees within the Facilities Management Department.

Qualifications:

  • Full-time undergraduate student at Western Washington University
  • Entering freshmen must have graduated from a Whatcom or Skagit County high school; this does not apply to currently enrolled students or transfer students.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • The scholarship will be awarded to recognize merit, however, financial need may be considered.

Guadalupe & Tom Nerini Sr. Scholarship

This scholarship recognizes the achievements of students who are undocumented immigrants as established by House Bill 1079.

Qualifications:

  • Must be admitted to WWU and qualify for resident tuition under the provisions established by HB 1079.
  • Must be enrolled as a full-time (12+ credits) undergraduate student for Fall 2017. Preference is given to returning WWU students.
  • Priority is given to students with demonstrated financial need as determined by the Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA).

Jolene Sanchez Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is intended to support tuition, books or other academic needs for students dealing with major medical problems or physical disabilities. A scholarship of $2,000 will be awarded for 2017-2018.

Qualifications:

  • Recipient must be dealing with major medical problems or physical disabilities.

Joy Stokes Scholarship

This scholarship honors Joy Stokes, a local Bellingham woman, who bestowed her estate to WWU to help pay the expenses of deserving students.

Qualifications:

  • Student must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student and be enrolled at least one quarter prior to application deadline.
  • Student must be currently working and plan to work during the academic year.
  • Student must demonstrate financial need, as determined by information submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA). Priority will be given to those students with extreme financial hardships.
  • Preference given to current freshman and sophomores.

Multicultural Achievement Program (MAP) Scholarship

Western Washington University has included in its design for excellence the need to diversify its student body, faculty, and staff. The Multicultural Achievement Program (MAP) Scholarship is an important component of the university's effort to diversify its student body. New WWU Students do not need to complete this application; MAP Scholarship consideration for incoming freshman and transfer students is processed via the admissions applications.

Qualifications:

Applicants must demonstrate solid academic abilities, strong leadership qualities and a commitment to multicultural issues and activities in school or the community. Financial need will be assessed. Applicants must:

  • be a full-time (12 credit hours per quarter) undergraduate student at WWU during prior academic year (foreign study, off-campus, and other non-state supported programs are not eligible).
  • be enrolled at WWU for at least one quarter prior to application deadline and possess a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.3.

Priority consideration is given to applicants who file a valid Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), demonstrating financial need.

NW Washington Medical Society Scholarship

The NW Washington Medical Society Scholarship was established for pre-med students at Western Washington University (WWU). One $3,000 scholarship will be awarded in 2017-18 to a qualified WWU student who is pursing a pre-med track.

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a curriculum in preparation to attend medical school
  • Completion of 90 or more credits
  • "B" grades or better in Chemistry 351, Physics 114 or 161, and Biology 206
  • Minimum 3.5 GPA

Nabhi Ram Joshi Scholarship

This scholarship was established by one of Western’s most devoted patrons, Miriam Snow Mathes, in memory of Nabhi Ram Joshi, a foreign student who passed through the University over 90 years ago. One scholarship will be awarded for 2017-2018.

Qualifications:

  • Full-time undergraduate Western Washington University students. Incoming freshmen and transfer students are eligible to apply. 
  • Scholarship applicants must either have been born in India or have a parent or grandparent born in India.
  • Applicants must demonstrate strong leadership qualities as well as high academic merit.

Non-Traditional Student Scholarship

Western Washington University is offering a scholarship program for non-traditional students. This scholarship is funded through the WWU tuition waiver program. The Non-Traditional Scholarship (in combination with other tuition waivers) cannot exceed the cost of tuition on a quarterly basis.

Qualifications:

Detailed requirements for the above criteria can be found on the scholarship application. Applicants must be a Washington State resident, demonstrate financial need as defined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA), and be enrolled at least half-time with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. In addition, students must meet one or more of the of the following non-traditional student criteria:

  • Displaced Homemaker
  • Dislocated Worker
  • Delayed College Enrollment
  • Students with Dependents
  • Students with Disabilities
  • Foster Youth
  • Non-Citizen Students with HB 1079 Status

Phonathon Legacy Scholarship

This fund was established to provide financial support for an outstanding Phonathon caller and to help honor the important work that Phonathon callers do for all members of the university community. Preference will be given to students with financial need who have also shown high levels of achievement and dedication during their time with the WWU Foundation Phonathon.

Qualifications:

  • Both full-time undergraduate and graduate students at WWU employed by the WWU Foundation Phonathon Call Center are eligible to apply.
  • To receive this scholarship, you must remain in good academic standing and remain employed by the WWU Foundation Phonathon for the duration of the award.
  • Priority will be given to those students who demonstrate financial need. Financial need is based on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The 2017-2018 Phonathon Legacy Scholarship will not be available. Please check with the Scholarship Center in spring 2018 regarding the availability for the 2018-2019 academic year.


Susan Brown Advancing Technology Education Scholarship

This scholarship recognizes the growing need for support of students interested in teaching technology to faculty and students.

Qualifications:

  • Recipient can be either an undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing. Must be enrolled for at least one quarter prior to the application deadline.
  • Preference given to students who volunteer through the Student Technology Center.
  • Applicant must show a demonstrated commitment to advancing technology education.

Talitha E. Carleton Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship honors Talitha Carleton, a gifted teacher whose strength of character, humanity and lively mind inspired many. This scholarship is intended for a student with an "inquiring mind who is altruistic, socially responsible, highly principled and shows promise of future achievement." One scholarship will be awarded for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Qualifications:

  • WWU student, continuing graduate or undergraduate, in the liberal or fine and performing arts. Must be enrolled for at least one quarter prior to application deadline.
  • Academic achievement. In general, only students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above in his/her major need apply. However other criteria, such as financial need, leadership qualities and activities will also be considered.

Van Nostrand Scholarship

This scholarship will support undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need as detailed on the FAFSA form. Awards will be given exclusively to single parents who are majoring in science and who have dependent children. The scholarship covers tuition and fees, as well as a stipend towards educational or childcare costs.

Criteria for awards: Preference for this award will be given to female, single parents with dependent children, who are majoring in science and have demonstrated financial need through the FAFSA document. Students must be in good academic standing, making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree, and have a minimum GPA of 2.0. However, male single parents with dependent children who meet all of the financial and academic criteria applied to female recipients will also be considered.

WWU Retirement Association Scholarship

The Western Washington University Retirement Association offers this scholarship to current WWU students.

Qualifications:

  • Student must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Undergraduate students with a minimum of 90 credits completed prior to the start of Fall 2017. Preference will be given to returning students.
  • Must attend at least half time, 6 credits per quarter
  • A minimum GPA of 2.7

WWU Spirit Scholarship

This scholarship recognizes current students who have demonstrated school spirit at Western through their activities and involvement. Students must be attending full time with a minimum GPA of 3.1, and have been enrolled for at least one quarter prior to the application deadline.

Western Foundation Academic Excellence Scholarship

This scholarship program, established in 1994, is supported by contributions to the Western Foundation’s general academic scholarship program for students with high academic merit and achievement.

Qualifications:

  • Continuing WWU undergraduate students of sophomore, junior or senior status planning to enroll full-time for the 2017-2018 academic year. Must be enrolled for at least one quarter prior to the application deadline.
  • Selection is based primarily on academic achievement. In general, only students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above need apply. However, activities such as employment and community service may be taken into consideration.
  • Applicants must have a minimum of three quarters of undergraduate study remaining toward their degree in order to be eligible.

Whatcom Educational Credit Union (WECU) Scholarship

Four $1,500 scholarships offered by Whatcom Educational Credit Union (WECU) will be awarded to Western Washington University students for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Qualifications:

  • Full-time students (taking a minimum of 12 credits), pursuing a degree with at least 90 credits completed prior to the start of Fall 2017. Transfer students who are entering with 90 credits or more may apply.
  • Minimum accumulated GPA of 2.75
  • Student must demonstrate financial need. The 2017-2018 FAFSA will be used to determine financial need.
  • Applicant must be a member in good standing at WECU for a minimum of one year.

Women of Western Scholarship

The campus-affiliated group Women of Western offers scholarships to full-time WWU students.

Qualifications:

  • Men and women students who will have senior status (135 completed credits) prior to the start of Fall 2017 and will be full-time students in the 2017-2018 academic year. Must be enrolled for at least one quarter prior to the application deadline.
  • Selection is based primarily on academic achievement. In general, only students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above need apply. However, other criteria, such as financial need, leadership qualities and activities will also be considered.
